Election results 2019 – First Past the Post exaggerates regional differences

If Canada had a proportional system such as Simple MMP, there would be no talk today of regional differences. Why? Because the diversity of the vote in individual provinces is often wiped out by First Past the Post.

Have a look at the shape of Parliament in 2019 if we were using a proportional system such as SMMP.

There would be Liberal (and other) representation in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Conservative representation the Atlantic region, and a more balanced Parliament.

The reason we have such regional resentment today is that First Past the Post has silenced a huge number of Canadians who voices are not heard in our government. In my opinion, this is the primary reason that many people do not bother to vote. If you want citizen engagement, then you need to respect the voices of the citizens!
